Support the night
The night does not need pity, it needs presence. These are concrete ways to keep it standing.
You don't support the night with an opinion, but with your presence.
It is easy to mourn a club that closes. Harder, and more useful, is to keep the places that still exist busy and alive. Below is what actually helps, from tonight to the long term.
Tonight already
- Show up, and come early. A full floor at one in the morning is, for a small venue, the difference between carrying on and not. Buy your ticket at the door or straight from the venue, not through resale.
- Give to the venue itself. Many venues and collectives are non-profit; drinks, merch and donations go straight back into the programming.
- Be a good neighbour. Quiet on the way out, no noise in the street, respect for the surroundings. One complaint fewer keeps a licence intact longer, which is exactly what the agent-of-change principle is about.[1]
Over the long term
- Back those who defend the night. Follow and support Stichting Nachtburgemeester Amsterdam and the Nachtraad; they hold the conversation with the city that we cannot hold from the dancefloor.[2][3]
- Know the money behind the culture. Funds such as the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts help keep night culture standing; understanding how that works makes you a better advocate.[4]
- Protect the space. The biggest threat is not noise but real estate. Support policy that protects existing venues when new building goes up next to them.[1]
Do it with us
Nachtgoed is non-profit; everything we earn goes back into the night. The most direct way to support is to take part: come to an edition, bring someone, and become one of the people who carry the night rather than consume it.
